Slot tester's review: Trystan Michielsen
Creepy Carnival takes the player into the old decrepit tent of a scary carnival troupe who still perform their tricks and shows, even if their audience might not be so enamoured of it anymore. The game features Sticky Wilds, Free Spins and Multipliers in an attempt to keep everyone watching.
The slot was released in 2015 by developer Nolimit City, who made sure the 5-reel, 3-row slot looked spic and span and the graphics have held up amazingly well over the years. There is a lot of detail put into the high-paying symbols and triggering one of the 20 bet lines will often activate a small animation. It’s not much but I appreciated the extra movement.
Unfortunately, the low-paying symbols are simple card letters that haven’t fully been integrated into the setting. They do use the font we usually see over the entrance of a carnival or at the hand reader but the design still makes it look quite disconnected. The slot comes with a free spins mode but unfortunately, that doesn’t introduce any new symbols or graphics either.
The sound design is a bit more inspired, with the type of carnival music you would expect when visiting the location in the slot. It could have been a bit creepier in my opinion, especially since the game really focuses on that. I am glad to say that there are no upbeat jingles when there’s a win to ruin the mood.
Creepy Carnival uses a sizeable number of different symbols to fill the reels, which is important when comparing it to the number of paylines and the features. As a result, the game has Medium Volatility which in my experience meant that wins were spaced out but not super uncommon and that they usually weren’t very big but high enough to pay back a number of spins.
Players can deal with the volatility by picking a bet between $0.20 and $100 per spin, increasing or decreasing the risk. The max. win of 1,595x your bet is pretty high but not as big when compared to other slots.
The symbols in the game include:
The symbols all look sufficiently different from each other and are easy to tell apart. When they’re part of a win, the tiles involved are lit up so it makes it easier to spot where the win is. If there are multiple wins at the same time, the tiles light up each individual winning bet line.
Creepy Carnival isn’t too heavy on the features but it does have a few, and they do augment the gameplay in different ways. I found them to be quite interesting and especially the free spins mode can result in some big wins.
Players will probably not be terribly surprised by the features that are included in the game, especially if they have any experience with slots at all. The features all work about the same as expected, with only some slight changes in how and when they are activated.
You will spend most of your time in the base game where the Wilds are your best friend. The game does show these Wilds pretty often, even when they’re not always as helpful. The respin function was a bit difficult to activate and was often disappointing as well since it only adds 2 wilds to the screen to facilitate wins.
The Free Spins mode actually felt easier to activate even though it wasn’t very common either. Once it does activate, the player has the possibility to retrigger additional spins but I found that to be rather difficult. The 5x multiplier is very nice but the main addition in this game mode is that the number of paylines is doubled, going from 20 to 40. This is obviously the most helpful part of this mode and makes it more likely the player gets a big win.
All in all, I found the features to be rather unoriginal but they work well together and provide enough engagement to stay interesting. The free spins and respins features feel a lot more volatile than the rest of the game but that only means you might walk away with a big win.
Creepy Carnival is a nice looking slot that could have put a bit more effort into its design to really stand out. The graphics are good and the sound design fits the game as well, but the lack of animations or special characters make the game feel very similar to other spooky carnival games like The Dark Joker Rizes.
The features were the best part of the game for me as they kept the basic gameplay engaging while still feeling like something unique. They aren’t terribly well integrated into the theme of the slot either but they stand on their own.
For players who enjoy a standard slot with a darker theme and medium volatility that spikes occasionally, Creepy Carnival might be a good choice. I enjoyed my time playing the game enough for me to recommend it, as long as you keep your expectations tempered.

I've been playing videoslots for almost 10 years and been a professional reviewer for over 5. I look at slots not just as a writer but also as a player, hoping to help others find their perfect slot.
I also enjoy movies, books and travel so any slots with those topics usually have my preference. But in general I'll play everything!
