Slot tester's review: Gail Banavage
Yeehaw! Time to grab your cowboy boots and go on the hunt for loot in Wild Wild West: The Great Train Heist. But do you have what it takes? Surrounded by dangerous villains and fast trains, this slot game exhibits some of the finest and highest quality graphics in a comic book style.
As you might know by now, I’m a big fan of Swedish software provider Net Entertainment, so when this dropped in 2016, I was oohing and aahing like no other. Besides the fact that it’s jam-packed with features, the graphics of this game are spectacular.
Wild Wild West is evidently a game that was created with gamers and possibly Generation Y in mind. It comes with an entrance script, bonus round animations and sequences developed in a comic book style, that makes playing this game progressively. Although the graphics exhibit dark yet warm colour tones, it fits perfectly with the badass villains and symbols we are dealing with here.
When you look at online slots these days and how far they have come along, and when you look back to slot games released circa four years ago, it is quite amazing to see, how these games have turned into instant classics. From the very beginning, NetEnt was already pushing the boundaries and creating a range of slot games that provide a completely unique gaming experience to players. Oh, yes, I am a fan!
The game enjoys a rather Ennio Morricone-themed soundtrack, or if you are not familiar with the Italian composer, Johnny Cash will do. The soundtrack would be fitting in a Western movie, but in this slot game, it takes the gameplay to another level and makes spinning the reels a true delight.
It is also the little touches that the team behind this slot have added to the game that is also enjoyable. For example, the ‘Spin’ button in this game, is a revolver barrel that has a Russian roulette sound-like effect thrown in for maximum oomph.
Symbols & Features
The four train robbers forming part of the gang are the highest paying symbols in this game, paying out a massive 500x per bet. As you can guess, the lowest paying symbols are the playing cards. There is also a Wild symbol, 7 symbols and a safe icon, which can trigger any bonus features.
But before diving right into the features, here are a few statistics. For starters, the game enjoys an RTP of 97%, which means you get more value for your buck. Bets start from as little as CA$0.10 with the highest bet being CA$100. This is very satisfying to hear since gaming is much more pleasurable when you don’t have to worry about your returns or bet sizes.
The folks at NetEnt have added a few nifty touches too, including an auto-spin button, a spacebar-activated spin option and also, graphics control. You don’t have to do much thinking here. Just sit back and spin the reels to your heart’s content.
One of the coolest features available during base gameplay is the Pick and Click one, which can be activated by landing three of the safe bonus icons. It can only be triggered by landing the safe icons on the first, third and fifth reels in one go. You are then invited to pick one out of the safes to reveal the prize, which can be between 5x and 50x your stake.
One of the main highlights of Wild Wild West is without a doubt, the free spins feature. Normally, I don’t give much thought to free spins bonus rounds, but in this game, it had me captivated since it comes to life and ups speed momentum with gusto.
The only way to activate the free spins rounds is by landing scatters anywhere on the reels as follows:
Land three scatters anywhere on the reels to receive 10 free spins Get 4 scatter symbols on the reels to gather 20 free spins Land five scatter symbols on the reels to get 40 free spins
Even better, you can re-trigger up to 60 free spins in total, when you land three or more scatters throughout this feature. Phew! I can’t keep up!
I was surprised that the humongous number of free spins was not the only benefit of playing this slot game. The most lucrative wins come in the shape and form of four various Wilds, that will truly add some spice to your free spins bonus rounds.
Before the free spins round even kicks off, you will spot a Wild Selector Wheel with four sectors. The arrow on the wheel will start spinning, and you need to click on ‘Stop’ to be rewarded with one of the following:
NetEnt couldn’t have done a better job if they tried with this game. It has been executed to perfection. The entertainment factor here is high, with changing backgrounds and screens. It compels and captures the dangerous ambience of the Wild West perfectly.
Since the hit rate for this online slot is 21.6%, you can expect to land quite a few frequent wins. Throw in the variety of wilds and multipliers into the mix, and you have a superbly entertaining game.
What I especially love about this game, is that it doesn’t kill off your bankroll in one go. If anything, it ebbs and flows back, without essentially draining it in one go. With just ten pay lines to contend with, this is a game that is superb for both newbies and experienced players, plenty of betting ranges and chances to walk away with a neat sum.
Of course, one might contend that there are slot games with better bonus features, and usually, I tend to agree. But for me, this game has ticked all the right boxes in terms of graphics, sounds, bonus features, and value for your money.
What a fantastic game!
