Slot tester's review: Trystan Michielsen
Barnyard Twister takes place on an American farm in the middle of twister season. It’s our job to try and keep our feet on the ground while dodging the symbols twirling around and to see if we can get some wins while we do so!
This slot was developed by Booming Games and released in 2018. If you’re at all familiar with this developer you’ll notice immediately they did something rare: they made this slot with a 5-reel, 5-row playing field which is a big departure for them. They did keep the number of paylines low, keeping it at a respectable 25 paylines.
The setting of Barnyard Twister should be hinted at in the title and that’s exactly what you get, the game is filled with symbols you’d find at a barnyard while the special feature resembles a twister. As a result, I think this slot is one of the most original to come out of the Booming Games stable.
The graphics are acceptable if not great. The background is a simple photograph of rolling acres while the reels are projected on a giant hay bale. The symbols can be split into cute original animal cartoons and rudimentary high card symbols. During the Free Spins mode, the Rotator feature has a twister fly across the screen which helps live it up.
Meanwhile, the music is a very slow, toned-down song that kind of resembles country music but if it were part of a children’s show. The sound effects are even more rudimentary, looping quickly and sounding rather bland. I was kind of disappointed they didn’t innovate this aspect of the game as much as they did with the rest.
There are a number of high-paying symbols that are made specifically for this slot. These are mostly barnyard animals and the twister Wild symbol. The low-paying symbols meanwhile are high-card symbols in distinct colours. They are all kept apart easily and that helped in seeing the winning paylines, but I’m not sure if it was really the best colour-scheme to fit the rest of the look.
From highest to lowest they are:
The main thing to note here is that the high-paying symbols come in single and double versions. The double symbols count as 2 symbols when part of a winning payline. They can interact with single symbols as normal. As an example, a double Chicken symbol and 2 single Chicken symbols on a winning payline would count as a four-of-a-kind win. The maximum length payline this way is 10.
Barnyard Twister has a few familiar features that are very common among Booming Games slots. At the same time, the Rotator feature is something very refreshing that I haven’t seen used by any developer before. It shows that this studio is able to innovate, they just don’t do it very often!
The features are:
What I found a little odd was that the Twister symbols, which trigger the Rotator feature, function as Wilds but this is not mentioned anywhere. The paytable only lists them as enabling the special feature, while the information screen doesn’t list it either. Meanwhile, I did see them act as Wilds regularly during my time playing. I don’t know if perhaps Booming Games forgot to mention it or there is something else going on, but I thought it deserved special notice.
You don’t get a lot of Free Spins when it is triggered, only 3, but to balance this out you only require one Scatter Symbol to enable them. The symbol only appears on reel 3. Once it triggers, the Rotator feature is guaranteed during the free spins.
Which brings me to the Rotator feature. It’s probably the most original feature I’ve seen developed by Booming Games and I haven’t seen any other developers use it before. The idea is simple: whenever there are 3 or more Twister symbols on the screen, the playing field will rotate 90 degrees clockwise after calculating all the wins twice. Any new wins this creates are then added to the total win.
This can happen multiple times in a row, depending on how many Twister symbols are on the screen. With 3 Twisters the playing field will rotate twice, 4 Twisters will cause it to rotate 3 times and 5 Twisters will trigger 4 rotations.
When you get into the Free Spins mode, there will be enough Twister symbols on the screen each spin to guarantee it will rotate at least twice, sometimes more. I found the feature to be very original and reasonably good at creating new paylines. Thanks to the 5-reel, 5-row playing field it’s possible for the game to rotate and in my experience would often result in some substantial wins.
It was genuinely nice to see some actual innovation and experimentation in a Booming Games slot. Many of their games are very similar to each other, down to the point that it’s hard to tell them apart at first glance. To see that they aren’t completely incapable of coming up with something news is encouraging, but it’s not clear yet if they will keep this up at all.
Barnyard Twister is a welcome breath of fresh air through the Booming Games stable. Even with only a single new feature and a slightly different playing field the slot feels like a completely new genre. There isn’t much required to make me happy!
Even though there are some innovations here, players that enjoy classic slots shouldn’t worry. The game still plays very quickly with no real choices to be made. The most important consideration is the bet amount, which can be set between £0.25 and £50 per spin. The max. win of 9,839x your bet is big, especially compared to their other slots.
With its Low Volatility, you can expect a pretty steady stream of small wins, with the Rotator features sometimes giving you some extra coins. The Free Spins mode is short and sweet but the guaranteed Rotators help in making them a bit more profitable than the base game as well.
