Slot tester's review Trystan Michielsen
Charlie Chance XreelZ is an adaptation to the original Charlie Chance slot that was released in 2020, coming with a special XreelZ function. The game further features the same excellent graphics, free spins and sticky wilds.
This version of the game is also developed by Play ‘n GO, who surprised players with the unique presentation. The slot reminds players of old-school cartoon-like Steamboat Willy or the recent videogame Cuphead that draws inspiration from the same style. A bouncy, pleasant to look at the style that brings back a presentation that is almost a hundred years old, now integrated into a slot.
The game features a 5-reel, 3-row playing field with a total of 243 paylines. Its most interesting feature is obviously the style, which permeates every part of the game. The symbols are split into high-paying and low-paying categories, with the high-paying slots not necessarily all very original but done in the same style that fits so well with the rest of the game.
Players that like this style of art will be absolutely delighted by the massive amount of small details that can be found. Both the playing field as the background are filled with pretty animations and gorgeous art that makes everything feel alive. Then there is the free spins mode, which adds even more unique graphics to keep players interested.
Charlie Chance XreelZ has a collection of symbols that don’t necessarily bring a lot of creativity to the board. What is interesting is the way they are presented. Even when dropping onto the reels without being a part of a win they will be animated slightly, bouncing as they come to a halt. Specific symbols like the Wild or the Scatter move even more when they’re a part of a win.
The game has low-paying symbols in the form of generic card suits that are presented as is and don’t do anything special. All the high-paying symbols are different types of items and characters that are animated in part or fully when part of a win.
This slot has High Volatility which becomes evident almost immediately when you start playing. I had a lot of trouble getting any wins but once they did hit they usually helped to keep my funds somewhat stable. The max. win is 20,000x your bet which is an impressive size when compared to other slots. To deal with the volatility, players can pick a bet between £0.10 and £100 per spin.
The symbols in the game include:
Charlie Chance XreelZ is a reimagining of the original Charlie Chance with only one real change, the XreelZ feature. For people who aren’t familiar with the first slot here is a complete list of the features included in the game:
In general, most players will find the base gameplay of this slot pretty simple. There weren’t a lot of Scatters while I played which meant I didn’t see either the re-spin or free spins feature activate very often. When they did trigger they would sometimes help create a win but this wasn’t a guarantee.
The XreelZ feature depends on a wild being part of a win that happened pretty regularly. This does require the next spin to also trigger a win in order to profit from the multiplier, which was the more difficult part. The game does feel very easy to play when it comes to following what’s happening on the screen.
The high volatility does hit hard and players should be aware that it’s unlikely they’ll hit a big enough win to compensate for their losses. Even during the free spins mode, I didn’t get many big wins and as a result, my funds dropped pretty severely. This didn’t feel too bad since the game is very fun to watch but power players should keep this in mind. If you have a limited budget, consider lowering your bets to be able to play longer.
Charlie Chance XreelZ is just like its predecessor a great example of what’s possible when a developer decides to invest in a creative presentation. The game looks absolutely gorgeous and the atmosphere pours out of every pore. The entire design is a breath of fresh air in a market that often feels quite stale.
The gameplay isn’t as impressive but still solid. The features are largely what you’d expect from a high volatility slot and there is little for the player to do in order to improve their chances to win. The XreelZ feature is a nice idea but requiring 2 wins in a row in a slot with high volatility is always going to be detrimental to the player.
If you’re looking for a slot that has a unique presentation and some amazing graphics, I would absolutely recommend this game. However, when it comes to the gameplay it will be largely reserved for those that enjoy high volatility and have the funds to stick it out until they hit a bigger win.
