Slot tester's review: Kati Saari
Get ready for a hot day at the market. These stalls are full of chillies and the spiciest free spins you’ve ever seen.
Big Time Gaming released Extra Chilli in April of 2018 and the crowd loved it. This game was on the top of the most popular slots lists for a good while. I tested this slot back then for the first time and could immediately see why people loved it. The features, the mechanics, the visuals and the pay structure were all on point.
Extra Chilli is one of the most well-known, and in my opinion, one of the greatest, Megaways slots on the market. Bonanza may be the original big cheese, but those two years of development really paid off. Extra Chilli is a much more pleasant experience for the player.
If you haven’t seen a Megaways slot before, they might look a bit confusing. They are actually really easy to understand and the mechanic adds a little extra flavour to the game. The game just randomises the number of symbols on a reel and the more you get, the better it is for you. I will go over this mechanic in the Features section if you want more details about it.
Graphics and sound
When the game opens up, you are greeted with a sunny day at the market. The stalls are full of fresh vegetables, the juiciest fruits and the hottest chillies you can find.
The game is very thematic and it utilises the theme well. The reels look like they are a part of the market stall and belong in their surroundings. BTG managed to create an atmospheric environment, where all the visual aspects are in harmony.
Just like Bonanza, the music in Extra Chilli is interesting. When you open the game up, there is just a little chatter in the background. But when you hit that spin button, whoo boy, it’s go time. The energetic mariachi music starts to play and it does come as a little surprise if you don’t expect it.
The music is fine, but it might be a little much for some players. Especially if you spin manually, as the music can cut off before you even get to hit the spin button again. If you play with auto spins, then you get to hear it properly.
Symbols and wins
The reels are full of colourful symbols, ten regular and two specials to be exact. The high-tier symbols are crystal chillies and the low-tier ones are card numbers from nine to ace. They even share the same colours as the chillies in order of value.
The special symbols are the wild and the scatter. The stack of fireworks is the wild, which just normally substitutes other symbols and has no special features attached. The scatters are plates with letters on them and if you spell HOT, you activate the free spins. There is a little extra feature there as well for those hard-boiled gamblers. You can gamble on your spins to either get more or lose them all.
Unlike many other Megaways slots, Extra Chilli has only medium volatility. This is a major improvement in my books, as now you have better chances to win outside of the Free Spin feature. That feature will always be good, but now everything else got a bit better. If you have played other Megaways slots before, Extra Chilli might feel a bit more balanced than the others.
But like I said before, the free spins are the best way to win in this slot. Just get those reels spinning and you’ll get some good wins. The reason why is the increasing multiplier that goes up every time you get a win, or a Reaction, as the game calls them. This multiplier has no maximum value, which is nice.
Megaways is a cool feature that gives a little extra randomness to the game. Now each reel can have between 2 and 7 symbols on it and the slot will automatically calculate the maximum amount of possible paylines for those symbols. That is your Megaways number and the higher it is, the better. The size of the symbol doesn’t matter, so the more you can pack on a single reel, the more paylines you get and the better your chances of winning are.
Extra Chilli has Cascading Wins, which means that a single spin can give you multiple wins in a row. When you get a winning combination, those symbols get destroyed and new ones will fall in their place. The game calls this a Reaction and you can get new Reactions from the new symbols that cascade down.
When you start your free spins, you get a chance to risk them for even more spins. A wheel of fortune is brought in with sectors of two different colours. If you land on one, you get more spins and if you land on the other, you lose.
If you win the regular 8 spins from the scatters, you have a chance to get 12, 16, 20 or even 24 spins from the gamble feature. On the higher levels, you won’t lose all of your spins if you lose. Just most of them.
This is a tough choice to make. The Free Spin feature is amazing, but so is starting it with even more spins. I know I can’t bring myself to spin the wheel more than once, if that.
Be careful with these free spins, as they are spicier than any chilli. Just get at least three scatters that spell the word HOT and you just won 8 free spins. Every scatter beyond the three will give you 4 extra spins.
The big deal about these free spins is the multiplier. Every Reaction will increase the multiplier by one for the duration of the free spins. There is also no limit to how high the multiplier can get.
During the spins, a new symbol will show up on the reels. The chilli pot is a scatter that can give you additional spins. You need at least three of them at the same time to win.
If you are impatient, you can just skip the wait and get to the Free Spin feature with a push of a button. It will cost you, but you get to instantly try your luck with the free spins. The price of the Feature Drop is 50x your wager, but you can reduce it. There are coins with the BTG stamp on it on the reels and each of them will bring down the price of your next Feature Drop.
This feature is not available in every casino. You can see it quickly if the button is there on the side of the screen.
Extra Chilli is a spicy slot and sure worth your time. I felt that Big Time Gaming needed a couple of years to really hone the Megaways concept to create that perfect slot. To me, Extra Chilli is that slot.
When you compare it to Bonanza, you get a lot of the same features, but there are a couple of important details that have been updated. Better scatters, more balanced wins and improved visuals are just some of the improvements BTG did.
One thing I would have wanted to see fixed, is the game speed. You still can’t click on the game to stop the reels early or even skip the big win counter. There are so many Reactions and effects, that I would occasionally just want to get them over and see how much I won.
This slot is a fun one. For me, this fills the role of that one slot you play, when you just want to go all out and have a good time. I don’t bother with strategies or tactics with this one. I just spin it to win it.

The year was 2013 when I first came across online casinos. Around the same time, I also began my career as a content writer, specializing in online casinos and casino games.
It's been an awesome journey, seeing how online casinos have evolved since the early 2000s to what they are today!
During these years I particularly fell in love with online slot games. I'm continuously amazed by how they've advanced from simple, three-reel slots to beautifully crafted games - sometimes working without reels entirely.
My favourite games are usually made by NetEnt and Play'n GO. Though it's hard to name just one all-time-favourite, Gonzo's Quest was the one that "reeled" me in.
