Flowers: Christmas Edition is the sequel to the popular Flowers, this time set in a Christmas setting! With almost identical gameplay, it’s going to be interesting to see what will keep people playing this slot.
The most obvious difference between the Christmas and Regular Editions is the theme. Flowers: Christmas Edition is steeped in the holiday spirit. All the symbols are still largely the same. Where the flowers are covered in snow, the card symbols are also turned into gingerbread. I thought that was a cute detail! The background is covered in snow with some Christmas decorations added for good measure.
The game is still the same when it comes to its layout. It has 5 reels and 3 rows, a suitable 30 paylines and the same features as the original. I thought the changes were a little minimal to excuse a new version of the game that came out 2 years earlier. Perhaps developer NetEnt was trying to keep the slot relevant without making it too obvious.
The music also felt very similar to the original game. The sounds in the background reminded me more of a nice summer afternoon in the forest than a cold day in the winter. There isn’t really a soundtrack to speak of and the jingles when there was a win or the free spins mode was enabled weren’t that impressive either.
Symbols
The game has the same list of symbols as the original game. The concept of the slot that differentiates it from other similar games is that there are 2 variations of the high-paying symbols: a single and double version. They also count as either 1 or 2 symbols when it comes to calculating a winning payline, making it possible to get a ten-of-a-kind win with the high-paying symbols. It also applies to the Free Spins symbol.
From highest to lowest the symbols are:
I thought the symbols were clear enough to differentiate thanks to their colours and shapes. The double and single versions were a little harder to tell apart but the game made wins very obvious. Most of the symbols were not animated, only the Wilds really show any movement.
Features
The game lacks any new features that the original Flowers didn’t have. If you’re a new player or you simply never got around to trying out Flowers, here’s a quick list:
It was clear pretty early on as I played that the Free Spins mode is the source of the biggest wins. Not only does it grant a multiplier to all wins it also has Stacked Wilds to increase the likelihood of the wins. The game’s High Volatility also amplified this.
The Free Spins didn’t trigger very often and it was usually with only the minimum of free spins and the smallest multiplier, which was 2x. Even then, the wins were quite big and really stacked up, making the rest of the game worth it as a means to get to the free spins mode.
In Conclusion
Flowers: Christmas Edition is a game either for people that are really big fans of Flowers and are looking for a change of scenery or people that really like Christmas and are looking for something classic to entertain themselves with.
I didn’t really see the purpose of Flowers: Christmas Edition. The graphics are only slightly updated compared to the 2013 version, the music is still barely there and it even has the same features. The only real changes are the little pieces of snow added to the symbols and that wasn’t enough to keep me interested.
To diminish the risk of the high volatility a little, players can choose a bet between £0.30 and £75 per spin. The prospect of a truly massive max. win of 15,000x your bet might also be the reason so many people still prefer to play Flowers: Christmas Edition!
