Expert's review Trystan Michielsen
Slot tested
Genie’s Fortune takes us back to the Arabian peninsula where players are treated to a collection of stories and adventures. This slot offers a bonus game, free spins as well as paylines from both ways.
The slot was developed and released by Betsoft in 2011 and it shows with the graphics being severely outdated. Playing it on a regular monitor the symbols are very fuzzy and a lot of the details are difficult to make out. Besides that, there is a lack of meaningful animations to help keep the game alive. Everything just looks old and rather simple. What I did like was that all the symbols are originally created for the slot, even when they aren’t all as original.
Players will be playing on a standard 5-reel, 3-row playing field with an average of 30 paylines to get a win on. When that happens the winning tiles are highlighted by a terrible pink effect that I feel doesn’t fit the theme of the game at all. Speaking of the theme, they did manage to implement the Arabian setting well. Everything we see is related to it and they help set the mood.
When it comes to the sound design it’s unfortunately also quite outdated. The sound effects themselves are somewhat related to the setting, with snake charmer music or generic Arabian music playing when there’s a win. The problem here is mostly the quality, with everything sounding rather crude and simple.
Symbols
Genie’s Fortune holds a rather large collection of different symbols. These include things like scimitars, a veiled lady, a bowl of fruit, and a flying carpet. None of the symbols are unfortunately animated but they do help the setting come alive. If you’re looking for a game with a distinct Arabian setting, and you don’t mind the outdated graphics, this one might fit the bill.
The game is listed as having Medium Volatility which fit my experience pretty well. The game will grant you regular wins often but those won’t be enough to win back more than a handful of spins. There are bigger wins to be gotten but they will likely require you to activate the bonus game or the free spins mode.
Players are able to pick a bet between £0.02 and £300 per spin to augment their experience. This is obviously a huge span of choices and is sure to help players pick the bet that exactly fits their preference. Larger bets will result in larger wins but it’s also more likely you’ll run out of funds if things don’t go your way. Pick a small bet to last longer with the coins you have but any wins will only be a fraction of what they could be.
If you are the type of high-roller that is looking for a slot with a big jackpot, this game won’t be the one for you. In fact, the maximum win of 200x your bet is very small considering the volatility. As such, I would consider this slot mostly for new or casual players who don’t really care about winning the jackpot.
The symbols in the game include:
Features
Genie’s Fortune is not very complicated when it comes to its features but it does have a few that help liven up the experience:
Most players will instantly understand how all features work and the game does a good enough job to explain it in the slot itself. You won’t be required to go digging through the paytable to figure things out.
In my experience, the free spins mode was the least effective as it often barely had any wins. The coin win game with the monkey was a nice addition to the slot but only activated for me once. The Bonus Game with the genie was the most interesting as it both activated quite often as well as offering quite substantial coin wins.
In Conclusion
Genie’s Fortune is the type of slot that really shows its age, not just in its graphics but also the features. They are all perfectly fine but exceedingly simple and not very exciting. At times, I barely noticed that I had activated the free spins mode since the slot puts so little attention on it. The background doesn’t even chance and the free spins counter is hidden in the rim of the slot.
That said, if you’re looking for a standard slot that is easy to understand and will not hold out on wins it's a great game to try out. I doubt many players will remember it for very long after they close it but that doesn’t mean they won’t enjoy the time they do spend with it.
I would recommend turning the music off. The quality is very low and it does little to set the mood. It’s also a reminder of how far slots have come in the last 10 years since this one was released.
