Slot tested

Gold Tiger Ascent brings us to the peaks of some very snowy mountains where a gold tiger teaches us how to balance our chi and spin the reels. It further features wilds, scatters and free spins to keep us entertained.

The game was developed by Betsoft and released in 2022, making it one of their newest slots. It also offers us the possibility of seeing where they stand now. I thought it looked great with some original images both on the reels and in the background. The titular gold tiger gets a prominent place next to the reels to remind us who they are. Triggering the free spins mode animates them for a short while too.

With a 3-reel, 3-row playing field this slot uses a smaller number of symbols per spin than most other modern games. Players can also only get three-of-a-kind wins on any of the 10 paylines. Nevertheless, I found I was able to get wins pretty regularly. When this happens, the symbols light up and a total coin win is shown. Unfortunately, the slot doesn’t include too many special animations for this.

As far as the sound design is concerned the game makes use of familiar Asian music. It does sound like an original song with what appears to be an electronic instrument. The music stays largely in the background but swells up when the free spins mode is activated. Meanwhile, the different sound effects also stay pretty soft to not mess up the atmosphere.

Gold Tiger Ascent doesn’t have a very big playing field and as such doesn’t require an incredible number of different symbols. Still, it fills the reel with the usual mix of low- and high-paying symbols. All of them are unique, made to fit the setting. The low-paying symbols are differently coloured boxes with Japanese symbols on them. Meanwhile, the more important symbols represent things associated with Asian culture.

The game has Medium Volatility which you can tell when you play the game. Wins are quite frequent and big enough to feel worth it. At the same time, they don’t occur all the time nor are they really so big they will instantly put you in the positives. Oddly enough, the RTP is only 95.37% which is considerably lower than the average. It’s one of those slots where it feels more giving than it really is.

Players can pick a bet between £0.10 and £10 to best their playstyle. While other slots allow you to bet up to £100 per spin, this game keeps a much tighter reign on it. It shouldn’t be a huge problem for most players, but it might annoy high rollers. The maximum win of 2,520x your bet is exactly the average for a game with this volatility.

You’ll find the following symbols in this slot:

  • Envelopes: Act as Mystery Symbols that can hide coin wins, wilds, high--paying symbols or scatters.
  • Scatters: Get 3 or more on the screen to activate the free spins mode.
  • Wilds: Wilds substitute the regular symbols in the game. Max. 25x your bet with three-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Sack of Gold: Max. 5x your bet with three-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Firecrackers: Max. 2x your bet with three-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Purple Box: Max. 0.5x your bet with three-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Blue Box: Max. 0.3x your bet with three-of-a-kind on a winning payline.
  • Green Box: Max. 0.2x your bet with three-of-a-kind on a winning payline.

Gold Tiger Ascent has a number of features, most of them coalesced into the Red Envelopes symbol. First, a quick overview of the separate features you can find in the game:

  • Red Envelopes: A special symbol in the game is the Red Envelope. These act like random symbols, showing a selection of different ones. All the Red Envelopes on the screen will always show the same symbol.
  • Wild: The Wilds symbols that can come out of Red Envelopes will substitute all regular symbols in the game.
  • Coin Wins: Red Envelopes can hide coin wins that are awarded directly to the player. They can vary in value from £1 to £5 apiece.
  • Random Symbols: The Red Envelopes can hold either Sacks of Gold or Firecracker symbols.
  • Free Spins: Scatters can appear in the Red Envelopes. If at least 3 Scatters are on the screen, the free spins mode is activated. During the free spins mode, additional Red Envelopes can appear and retrigger more spins.

It should be clear to players that the Red Envelopes are the most important part of the game. Everything else plays like a classic slot with a limited number of paylines and only a few symbols. The Red Envelopes don’t count towards wins themselves but they can hold wilds or high-paying symbols that do count.

Since all envelopes on the screen will have the same symbol it means this can quickly turn into a big win. Having a number of wilds on a small playing field makes it a lot easier to get a winning payline. Even if the envelopes show the lowest coin win, it’s counted multiple times. As a result, the feature acts like a clever addition to the gameplay.

Although the free spins mode isn’t especially interesting, it does amplify the frequency of the red envelopes. Because of that, it can increase the payouts even more. Coin wins can become extremely lucrative, as well as getting more frequent wins thanks to the other symbols.

In Conclusion

Gold Tiger Ascent brings an interesting visual style to the screen, coupled with a simple but effective gameplay loop. The base game feels very close to the classic slot. Meanwhile, by including a single feature that holds all other ones inside, it manages to add a lot of playability.

The graphics are sharp and original, using appropriate imagery. I would have liked to see some more animations but the lack of them doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the game. Players that are looking for a simple but entertaining slot will likely have a good time.

If I had to point out any downsides, the only real one I can find is the limited choice in bets. High rollers will likely feel quite limited in their options. Besides that, the jackpot is exactly average for a game with this volatility. It’s still a nice sum, though.
