Slot tester's review: Trystan Michielsen
The Highway To Hell slot brings us images of a desolate highway amidst fire and brimstone, rewarding those brave enough with the chance of winning big. Are you up for the challenge or would you rather take a stairway to heaven?
Built by relative newcomer Wazdan, Highway To Hell has to find its place amongst a big assortment of slots. Instead of going for cute or historic, it decided to go hard, daring us to venture down this road to damnation and seeing if it pays off. Keeping to a simple 5 reels, 5-payline setup I’m sure it’ll appeal to the metalheads who prefer classic slots.
Sound & Music
My first association when I saw Highway To Hell was, of course, the famous AC/DC song but besides the name, it does not borrow from that headbanger. Instead, it adds its own sound to the slot, giving us a different rocking tune to listen to as I barrel headlong down the highway. Unlike other slots that slow down or stop their songs when there is no spinning, Highway To Hell made sure that I could hear it play all the time.
Clicking on the ‘Spin’ button I’m treated to a slick electronic riff as the reels roll by before some meaty bass causes them to come to a halt. The different special symbols make sure I feel like I’m on the road with their own heavy sound effects - From the Wild’s Big Truck blaring its horn to the cool biker chick on her hog revving her engine.
Highway To Hell keeps it simple but clear, giving me stylised graphics without being overwhelming or making them unnecessarily flashy. The symbols are all in a style fitting the theme. The standard symbols: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 and 9, are sharp and blocky as most of us associate with heavy rock bands. The special symbols, the ones made especially for Highway to Hell, belong on the road and any win with those results in a quick animation.
Something I want to give a special mention is the speed function. Most slots (regardless of software developer) allow you to choose between normal and fast spins, depending on how much a player enjoys the anticipation. Highway To Hell offers an ‘extra fast’ speed, which disables the reels spinning completely and simply shows you the next result immediately. Although it saves time it also takes away from the enjoyment of playing so my advice is to use it sparingly!
As a classic slot Highway To Hell sticks close to the standards we expect from slots like this. There are a series of symbols that can be divided into two categories: the standard high-value playing cards and the unique symbols that fit the theme of the slot.
A quick summary of the symbols and their values, from highest to lowest:
Highway To Hell doesn’t have a lot of special features but the ones it does have are a nice addition to the game. With only 5 paylines I thought it would be difficult to get winning spins but that’s where the first feature comes in:
Highway To Hell showed me that Wazdan isn’t afraid to take the road less travelled and go for something edgier. Where other developers might choose something cheery and colourful, this slot showed me that there is a lot of fun to be found in the darker topics too.
Adding a rowdy soundtrack to a theme that’s already pretty cool makes it stand out even more while the classic approach makes it as accessible to players as any other slot.
Although the features in the game are pretty lean, something like a bonus game wouldn’t have gone amiss, I feel its look and feel offers enough to entertain players for quite a while!
