Slot tester's review Ville Saari
Get ready for some comical frights. Pumpkinhead awaits you with a spooky slot for Halloween. Welcome to Horror Castle.
Fugaso released Horror Castle in 2018 but did it surprisingly in the spring. Usually seasonal slots are released right before that season, but Fugaso chose differently. Then again, this slot feels like it should have been published about five years earlier.
Horror Castle is not a ground-breaking game in any sense. It's a perfectly adequate slot with a few nice mechanics. The big draw here is the theme, which is all about cartoony frights. It does feel like some corners were cut, but the end result is fine.
If you love Halloween or are just looking for a medium volatility slot with some extra spooks, then you should keep on reading.
Graphics and sound
Horror Castle has somewhat interesting style choices. It is a tongue-in-cheek Halloween slot, but the artwork has a cheap feel to it. It’s like the stuff you would find on bags of Halloween candy. Distinct, but a bit comical.
The game doesn’t do anything subtly. You are bombarded with orange and black images and everything spooky. This is a Halloween slot for the child inside of us and not the realistic horror-loving adult.
When it comes to the sounds, the developers did a good job. All of the music and sound effects are nice and they fit the theme well. You won’t be humming these songs after you stop playing, but at the same time, nothing will annoy you when you play.
Symbols and wins
Everything is spooky and delightfully kooky. The reels are full of scary symbols to get you to a proper mood. There are 12 symbols in total with no generic numbers or card suits thrown in there.
The symbols are all thematic. You have black cats, skulls, ghosts, pumpkins and spiders, everything that a good scary game needs.
The symbols aren’t divided into two separate tiers but are actually pretty linear when it comes to prizes. Every symbol is a bit better than the previous one. The only exceptions are the wild and the scatter, which are significantly better.
The wilds are what makes this game interesting. First of all, they double every win they are a part of. That alone would be good enough, but there’s more. A wild on reel 1 or 5 expands and activates a free re-spin, and the game will randomly just throw more wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4.
The pay structure in this game is surprisingly balanced. You can get decent wins during the base game and you don’t feel like you have to activate the free spins. Sure, they are good, but not absolutely necessary.
The game has medium volatility and it shows. I was able to keep my balance steady for a couple of hundred spins at one point. Of course, this is both a good and a bad thing. You get to play a lot, but it’s not easy to win big. You might want to keep an eye out for the dry-spells, which can be annoying.
If a creepy pumpkin wild ever lands on reel 1 or 5, a sticky Pumpkinhead will jump on that reel and fill it up with wilds. You get a free re-spin with Pumpkinhead still standing on that reel.
Pumpkinhead will occasionally throw his head. The pumpkin will explode on the reels and create at least one sticky wild. You get a free re-spin with all the exploding wilds still on it. It is possible to get multiple re-spins one after the other. This is a completely random feature.
When the wolves are howling, you get to play for free. Just get at least three scatter symbols and you win 10 free spins. Pumpkinhead will jump on the reels and cover the entire middle reel with wilds for the duration of the spins.
Horror Castle is an interesting game. It is at the same time a comical Halloween-themed slot and a forgettably mediocre game. The theme is what saves it from being completely forgotten.
The game fills a particular role as a seasonal slot. When Halloween is upon us, some players go out their way to find the most spooky and creepy slots. This game is perfect for those, who don’t want any realistic horror, but rather some childlike scares.
I know I mostly focus on the external features, but that’s because the inner workings are rather dull. The game is just fine, no questions there, but it’s nothing special. We have seen these mechanics and played this game before many times. It’s fun for a while and good for bonus wagering, but that’s about it. As a game, it’s okay.
If you are looking for something funny to play around Halloween, then give Horror Castle a try. Sit down with your friends and have a laugh at the expense of Horror Castle.
