Paylines from both sides
Slot tester's review: Trystan Michielsen
Lucky Carnival takes us to the sprawling, exciting streets of Rio de Janeiro during its famous carnival. Players are treated to beautiful women, colourful backgrounds and a number of thrilling features.
With Lucky Carnival, Red Tiger showed us in 2018 that they hadn’t forgotten how to make fun, colourful slots that are based on a strong theme. The game takes us to Brazil where carnival is celebrated, showing neon-signs in the background as if we’re on a giant float. The 5-reel, 3-row playing field is similarly filled with strong, bright colours and different characters that personify the event.
There are only 10 paylines with which to get wins, but these are enough to give the game its Medium Volatility considering the relatively small number of different symbols. Another factor is that the paylines are counted from both sides, both left to right and vice versa. The high-paying symbols are all different carnival dancers who can become stacked and fill an entire reel. At the same time, a single Free Spins symbol on the screen is enough to trigger the Free Spins mode.
As can be expected from a game with this setting, the slot used Brazilian carnival music to set the mood. While it’s relatively toned down during the base game, getting a win or triggering the free spins mode causes the music to get more excited. I thought it did a good job of making me feel like I was watching a parade.
The symbols in Lucky Carnival are all colourful and sharp, with the different characters as the big draw. Each character is a dancer dressed in traditional carnival garb. Unfortunately, they aren’t animated but each of them can expand to fill the reel, giving us a full view of their outfit. The other symbols are card letters without any special treatment other than their colour. It stays relatively easy to distinguish between everything, and a win highlights the symbols involved for clarity’s sake.
The symbols are from highest to lowest:
The features in Lucky Carnival were pretty interesting in my opinion, offering players the ability to get spaced out bigger wins instead of a regular supply of smaller wins.
The entire time you’re playing, the paylines from both sides feature is activated. This essentially doubles the odds of getting a win since paylines run from left to right and vice versa. Combined with the rather small selection of symbols and the features that appear quite frequent keeps the game’s volatility on medium. I think if even one of these factors was changed, the game would immediately leap to high volatility.
Even so, I found my funds to decline steadily and rather quickly. Spins go fast and most of them won’t have a coin win, or when they do it won’t be high enough to recover more than a few spins. The volatility was not enough to compensate for the cost of spinning and it’s something players need to keep in mind. Although they can pick a bet between £0.10 and £80 per spin, even lower bets can be unrewarding if they’re not careful.
The other features are more visual and thus more fun. A lot of emphases is placed on the different characters in the game. The Stacked Symbols only apply to the dancers, where a single tile is expanded to fill the reel so we can see their entire outfit. Similarly, the colossal symbols only count for the dancers who are shown in a 3x3 symbol.
There might be a diamond showing up during both the base game and the Free Spins mode, which will spin and release 1 of the characters onto the screen. This makes a winning bet line more likely but not guaranteed. During my time playing, this feature was activated most often but it was still entirely random.
I thought the Free Spins mode had an interesting twist in how it activated. While most slots require you to get 3 Scatter Symbols on the screen at the same time, Lucky Carnival only has 1 Free Spins symbol that can only appear on reel 3. When it does, this immediately triggers the Free Spins mode. Even though the symbol was rare to stop on the screen, it did help make the Free Spins mode a more regular part of the game.
When it started this mode, I got to pick 1 of the 3 dancers to reveal the number of free spins I got to play with, usually between 7 and 14. The Free Spins mode is largely the same as the base game except for the appearance of the Colossal Symbol. Even so, that symbol was very rare.
Lucky Carnival is a gaudy, bright slot that perfectly matches the style and feel of the most famous party in the world. The music sounds fine and adds a lot to the atmosphere. The different dancers play a big role in the game and each has their own look to them.
I found the features to be interesting without being overwhelming and they mostly explained themselves just by how they operated. The game offers a max. win of 1,000x your bet for the players that are here for the wins, but I think the game is also an excellent pastime for people that simply enjoy a fun, good-looking slot.
