Slot tester's review: Kati Saari
Welcome to Magic Maid Cafe! Would you care for a piece of cake, or maybe a scrumptious cookie? Any of them goes well with a cup of coffee and maybe a win or two. So sit back, relax and enjoy the delicious treats served by cute anime girls in maid costumes.
Magic Maid Cafe was released in 2019 by NetEnt. This slot looks like candy - it’s just that sweet and pink! However, this is one of the rare occasions when NetEnt really let me down. The game is good-looking and it runs smoothly, but I couldn’t feel any less disappointed when I realised that Magic Maid Cafe was just a clone from the well-known slot Gonzo’s Quest. There is absolutely no difference between these two games aside from the theme.
In case you’re not familiar with Gonzo’s Quest, it’s only just one of the most popular game NetEnt has ever created. Of course, there are other games as well, but Gonzo was one of the first slots to introduce the Avalanche feature (which is, by the way, trademarked by NetEnt). Together with increasing win multipliers, these features lifted Gonzo’s Quest to the hall of the renowned online slot games.
So, if you have played Gonzo before, you might as well say that you already know how to play Magic Maid Cafe. But, if either of these slots doesn’t ring any bells, then you’re up for a treat. Just choose the theme best to your liking - either go hunting for the golden city of El Dorado or have a relaxing coffee and a bowl of chocolate ice cream - and have fun.
Graphics and sound
Magic Maid Cafe is set, well, in a maid-themed cafe. Everything is done in Japanese anime-style, so if that’s your cup of tea (or coffee), you’re going to have fun. The game starts with a blonde, cute anime girl welcoming you in the cafe. Then she patiently waits as you browse their menu which, of course, is the game area.
The high-paying symbols are other maids serving in the cafe, as where the low-value symbols are the menu items. Varying from chocolate cakes to jam-filled cookies, they look nice but are way too similar to each other. This makes it hard to read the game, even though it doesn’t really matter as the game does this for you. But, still, it would be nice to be able to make out one symbol from the others.
By the way, the play button is a cup of coffee. A nice, small touch! The audio is more or less the ambience sounds from a cafe, but with a very tight loop. The track is only 2 or 3 seconds long and even if it loops pretty well, you can definitely notice the repeating clanks. NetEnt didn’t even bother to renew the effect sounds - they’re about 95% imported from Gonzo’s Quest and with only the slightest touch-ups.
Symbols and wins
Magic Maid Cafe has five reels, three rows and 20 fixed paylines. The paylines go from left to right and any winning combinations must start from the leftmost reel.
The game uses coins to indicate bets and wins. You can adjust the bet level between 1 and 5 and the value of a coin between 1p to 50p. On the first bet level, the bet is 20 coins per spin. This simply means that you’re betting 20 coins, valued as you choose.
The minimum bet is 20p per spin when the bet level is 1 and the coin value is 1p.
In addition to the basic symbols, the game also has Free Falls and Wilds. The Free Fall symbols are golden keys which can open the Free Fall free spins.
The question mark symbols are Wilds which can substitute all other symbols in the slot, including Free Falls.
The Avalanche feature happens every time there’s a winning combination on the reels. After the first winning chain is removed, you get x2 multiplier to the next possible win. The Avalanche and the multiplier feature continue until there are no more winning symbols, after which the multiplier goes back to x1.
In the base game, the win multipliers are x1, x2, x3 and x5. After x5 multiplier the next wins are also multiplied with 5.
During the Free Fall spins, these multipliers are replaced with x3, x6, x9 and x15.
The Wilds can also substitute Scatters, so you need at least three Scatters, or one / two Scatters and one / two Wilds to trigger Free Falls. Notice that the symbols need to be on the same payline starting from the leftmost reel, just like any other symbols in order to win.
However, it’s possible to trigger more than 10 free spins. For example, if you manage to land the Scatters (or a combination Wilds and Scatters) on a payline number 4 it also affects to the payline number 18. As the symbols land on two paylines at the same time, you win the total of 20 Free Fall spins.
The Free Fall spins work just like the spins in the base game. The only difference being the multipliers are better and can multiply your wins up to x15.
It’s possible to re-trigger the free spins by landing three new Scatters.
I think it’s a good question about why NetEnt made Magic Maid Cafe. It offers literally nothing new aside to the theme. Maybe NetEnt thought the anime theme was too risky and didn’t want to invest too much on it, and so it was easier to just re-brand a working game? Either way, for experienced players, Magic Maid Cafe was just another stock game with nothing new or innovative.
But, if we look at the slot solely on its own, it’s not a bad game. The graphics are modern and cute, the gameplay works nicely and the features complement each other. The free spins are just as much a thrilling experience as they are in Gonzo’s Quest and the chance of getting up to x15 multiplier has a great potential to start the streak of big wins.
So, whichever you choose to play, Magic Maid Cafe or Gonzo, you can’t go wrong. They’re both great slots, but as Magic Maid Cafe is just a pure clone, it probably never will achieve such popularity.
