Slot tested

Rise of Olympus sets its sights on Greek mythology and its pantheon of gods that inhabit the place. The slot brings a selection of these gods to life, as well as giving players access to a bonus game, Cascading Reels, and multipliers.

This slot features a 5-reel, 5-row playing field that is populated with themed symbols, consisting of different characters as well as thematic icons. The game was developed by Play ‘n GO and released in 2018, where I played it for quite a while as there is a lot to grasp. Players can enjoy an original variety of symbols and there is also a lot of animation work done, which I think the creators deserve credit for.

There are a lot of things to see during almost every spin, with wins being counted whenever the same symbol appears on any horizontal or vertical line at least 3 times. This is quite a unique approach when compared to other slots, especially the vertical wins. Even so, the game has High Volatility as the payouts aren’t very high and the features make it more likely to get a win. As a result, a regular win has a low payout.

Rise of Olympus gives players a collection of original symbols that fill up the reels and keeps it looking engaging. There are a lot of colours used, as well as animations whenever a symbol is part of a win. These animations are simple and quick but help keep the slot look more alive.

The symbols in the game include:

  • Wild: Substitute all symbols in the game. Max. 50x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.
  • Zeus: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.
  • Poseidon: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.
  • Hades: Max. 10x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.
  • Any Gods: Max. 5x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.
  • Harp: Max. 3x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.
  • Helmet: Max. 3x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.
  • Trident: Max. 2x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.
  • Lightning Bolt: Max. 2x your bet with five-of-a-kind in a row.

Players can pick a bet between £0.20 and £100 per spin like most slots, allowing the player to decide how much they want to spend. The wins will be bigger with larger bets, but it will obviously also drain their funds faster. With high volatility, this is always a risky choice since betting too high might cause funds to run out before any big win is triggered.

As an incentive to keep playing, the game offers a max. win of 5,000x your bet. This is a sizeable reward but in my time playing, I never felt like I was close to winning it.

Rise of Olympus has a selection of rather original features that give the player something interesting to watch almost every win. They also change up how other features are triggered or function.

  • Wilds: Wilds substitute all other symbols in the game.
  • Ways To Win: Wins are awarded to any 3 or more symbols in a horizontal or vertical line.
  • Cascading Reels: Whenever there is a win, the winning symbols disappear and cause the remaining symbols to fall down.
  • Power of Gods: Any spin with no win has the possibility of granting one of the 3 Gods to activate.
  • Free Spins: If the entire playing field is empty the free spins mode is triggered.
  • Wrath of Olympus: Winning with God symbols fills up the meter. A fully filled meter triggers a free spins round.

During the base game, players can expect a steady stream of small wins. These are quite common thanks to the limited number of symbols and the larger playing field. The Cascading Reels also help with getting multiple wins. One of the differences with most games that use this feature is that the symbols that disappear aren’t replaced. Instead, the goal should be to clear the entire field.

3 gods can appear whenever a spin doesn’t net any wins. These gods also operate the same way during the Free Spins mode.

  • Hades: One set of symbols is transformed into a random different symbol on the screen. During the Free Spins mode, this God grants 4 free spins.
  • Poseidon: This God will cause up to 2 wilds to appear. Choosing this God will grant 5 free spins.
  • Zeus: Zeus will cause two sets of any symbol to be destroyed. This will grant 8 free spins when selected during the Free Spins mode.

It was common to see the gods randomly show up during the base game, but getting them to appear multiple times during the free spins mode had much better results. The difficult thing was to get the free spins mode to activate at all, which I only managed to do once. It did get me quite a big win, and the player will be asked to choose one of the Gods to help them which also influences it.

In Conclusion

Even though the Greek pantheon is an exhausted setting, Rise of Olympus did its best to improve on the formula. With a lot of different graphics and animations, as well as a number of different backgrounds players will stay interested in what’s on the screen for quite a while.

The features are a nice variation of the usual collection as well, especially focused on clearing the screen made it feel more accomplished when it worked out. Having the free spins mode trigger this way was a lot harder than the normal way though, so players shouldn’t expect too much out of it.

Players that don’t mind to spend some time learning the scope and functionality of the features will likely get a good experience in return. If you would rather have a standard slot that operates like most other games, it will probably be best if you keep looking.

Okay, I didnt like this at all. Symbols look kind of same, I dont like Greek mythology and even the colors got me upset. Luckily I dont have to play again, if I dont feel like it. There is a hundreds and hundreds of better games than this. And yes, no wins.
