Expert's review Trystan Michielsen
Sushi Bar is a game that brings us to a favourite place to eat for a lot of people. Created with an obvious Japanese theme and bringing to life a collection of tasty meals, this slot is sure to work up an appetite. The slot further features free spins, multiplier wilds and scatter symbols.
Developed by veteran studio Betsoft and released back in 2012, the game was part of a collection of slot that used 3D graphics to convey their message. Although these graphics have become somewhat dated, Sushi Bar has managed to keep looking fresh and appetizing. The slot makes players get a good look at a selection of famous sushi meals, some of which are presented in unique ways.
The game is built around a 5-reel, 3-row playing field that features a total of 25 paylines. When it comes to the symbols, all of them are made to look like they belong in a restaurant. Even the different card letters have sushi placed on top of them, which makes it look like they are presented this way. I thought this was a clever way to hide the fact that card letters are being used at all.
When it comes to the sound design we get what we expect, which is a Japanese-sounding soundtrack playing in the background. It keeps things rather soft and slow, only picking up slightly when activating one of the bonus features. I did hear the infamous Betsoft jingle a couple of times, a standard sound byte that plays for a bigger win regardless of the slot.
Sushi Bar has a number of different symbols that are all either related to the idea of a sushi restaurant or they are made to look the part. The 3D graphics actually hold up quite well here, as the details are too small to notice that they lack any textures. They actually help in keeping things visually distinct and it is easy for the player to tell them apart.
When you get a win the tiles involved will get lit up and the total coin win is shown before the game resumes. Activating the free spins mode changes the background and gives the playing field a different colour but doesn’t draw any extra attention to itself. Do keep an eye on the screen since it can be easy to miss. Thankfully, players receive quite a few spins to play with so this shouldn’t go unnoticed.
The symbols in the game include:
With a medium number of symbols, reasonable payouts for the higher-paying symbols and the inclusion of some basic features, the game expectedly lands on Medium Volatility. For me, that translated into a regular number of normal wins with the very occasional bigger win. The features were extremely rare and almost never activated.
Players can pick a bet between £0.02 and £125 per spin that they can adjust whenever they want. It’s an excellent way to decide the risk as well as seeing how far your funds can get you. I always recommend starting low and increasing as you see fit. There can be quite some time between bigger wins in this game.
The max. win of the slot meanwhile is 3,600x your bet, which is quite high considering the volatility but there are other slots that offer more. A good example here is After Night Falls, also released by Betsoft in the same year but with a maximum win of almost five times as much.
Sushi Bar doesn’t waste a lot of time with a number of features. In fact, you’ll really only have to deal with two here:
These features are about as basic as they get and they will not offer any surprises to players that have played any type of slot before. The Multiplier Wilds appeared quite regularly but they weren’t always part of a win. The Wilds do double up any win they’re part of but this is normally only a three-of-a-kind win. It was very rare for me to even see a Wild contribute to multiple win lines at the same time.
Activating the free spins mode was exceptionally hard and I only managed to do it twice in more than an hour of play. Obviously, this is not a guarantee that it will always be this hard but don’t count on the mode appearing very often. When it did activate, the wins I got were reasonable but nothing spectacular. They did help compensate for my lost funds up to that point, keeping me around the starting point.
Sushi Bar is an older slot that still manages to look well. The character on the side is just a stationary image which is too bad because I feel like it added some personality. Having it animated could have made the game feel a bit more alive. Nonetheless, the graphics have kept up well since everything is small enough to hide the lack of details.
The gameplay itself is rudimentary at best, with the most basic features as the only ones available. Wilds and Free Spins are so common that pretty much any regular slot has them. The game also does not attempt to spice them up in any way, simply letting them function as you would expect them to.
As a result, I think this game will mostly appeal to players who enjoy standard slots with basic gameplay but a strong sense of theme and setting. The sushi restaurant idea is carried through everywhere and as a result, you will get a fun, light slot to enjoy.
