Expert's review Trystan Michielsen
Thai Blossoms shows us a rustic scene somewhere in Southeast Asia where the player can relax while watching the reels of this slot spin. The game not only features great graphics but also makes use of sticky wilds, stacked wilds and free spins to entertain.
This game was released in 2021 by Betsoft, a studio known for releasing slots that often stay rather close to the classic formula but with some clever innovations. I’d say this game sticks to that approach. It comes with a 5-reel, 4-row playing field that nonetheless holds 100 paylines, making wins pretty frequent.
It’s immediately clear the game draws its inspiration from the southeast of Asia with the background showing us a rustic village. There is a pond, palm trees and even a field for cattle visible through the semi-transparent reels. I would have liked to see a few more animations but the gentle rustle of the leaves flanking the reels does help bring it to life.
To further establish the setting the game plays music that’s reminiscent of the area where the slot is set. We also hear various subtle sound effects that help place the game. We can hear certain types of drums and elephants. The music felt a little too soft compared to the effects but it did help create a fitting vibe.
Thai Blossoms divided its symbols along the usual lines. Low-paying symbols are represented by pink card letters. I was a bit disappointed at how simple these were, with the design not even taking into account the area in which the game was set. The high-paying symbols represent various types of fruit that can be found in the area, as well as the elephant as a scatter and a beautiful woman as the highest value symbol.
When playing this game you’ll have to be aware of the Medium Volatility. That means wins are relatively frequent but rarely big enough to really make a difference. Over my time playing, I did manage to increase my winnings somewhat but this will obviously not happen to everyone. The RTP is 96.21%, making it a tad better than average.
Players that want to augment their experience can do so by adjusting their bet in the game. They can pick a bet between £0.25 and £100 per spin, which is just about the usual for slots like this. If you’re looking for a big jackpot, this game won’t be for you. With a maximum win of 922x your bet, it’s arguably one of the lowest out there. Still, that doesn’t mean the game can’t be enjoyable.
The symbols found in this game are, from most to least important:
Thai Blossoms brings a number of features to the screen, most of them focused around Wilds. This is also why the payouts are so low and the volatility is listed as medium. Wins are pretty easy to accumulate but these are very small. With stacked and sticky wilds, the opportunity at getting multiple wins at the same time grows.
The features you’ll find in this game are:
It should become obvious to everyone playing that Wilds play a huge role. It’s a good thing they appear almost every spin, even though they don’t consistently play a part in creating a win. When it does happen, their importance increases as they become sticky for 2 spins. This is shown by the little counter on top of every symbol.
I’ve had it happen that Wilds would appear and become sticky, then contribute to a win with another wild the next spin which would then turn those sticky and so on. Although this only happened occasionally, it could turn into a series of bigger wins over a number of spins thanks to the sticky wilds.
The Wilds sometimes drop down onto the screen stacked but they don’t always stop on the screen exactly when the screen is full. As such, it can happen you only see a single Wild even though it’s technically stacked. This obviously doesn’t help much in creating wins. It did feel like this wouldn’t occur as often during the free spins mode, where the Wilds would often cover the entire reel.
Thai Blossoms is a pretty basic slot when it comes to its presentation and gameplay. The game does look great, the graphics are sharp and detailed. I wish they would have added a bit more character to it, as it is now it feels pretty generic. The different symbols also don’t add to a narrative or anything. They just seem to be picked because they’re associated with the setting.
If you enjoy slots that put a lot of emphasis on Wilds then this will be a perfect fit. Even though there are only sticky and stacked wilds, both of these variations appear frequently during the base game. When in free spins mode they are even more important. As such, you’ll see them all the time.
The small jackpot feels like a detriment and will surely put off a lot of players looking for a big payout. The people that don’t really care about that should have a good time though. I found my funds to grow slowly over time and although it’s not a guarantee it shows to me that the game is pretty forgiving.
