Slot tester's review: Kati Saari

The bandit gang is terrorising the town of Yggstone. You are the new sheriff and it is up to you to bring back order.

The One Armed Bandit is a thematic trip back in time to the Wild West. Instead of a realistic and historical slot, Yggdrasil chose to make a cartoony game, where you are the sheriff. Round up those bandits and bring peace to the town of Yggstone.

The 2019 slot is a beauty. Yggdrasil was able to create a great slot that combines a thematic and beautiful exterior with an interesting and fitting game mechanic. The slot feels like a proper, well-built entity and not just some pretty pictures on top of a game that has nothing to do with it.

Oh, and if you didn’t already know it, the name of the slot is also a reference to the history of fruit machines. The old mechanical slot machines used to have a large lever on one side to start the game, which was called the arm. Thus, the machines were known as ‘the one armed bandits’.

Graphics and sound

The hot, dry wind is blowing and the scorching sun is blazing above. The air is full of sand and dust, and the arid mesas are looming over the horizon. It is the Wild West in all its gritty glory.

When you start the game, you are greeted with a stereotypical landscape of the American frontier. This reminded me of all the cartoons and comics I enjoyed as a kid, that took place in the Wild West. The slot looks great and even the developers thought of everything. Even the smallest details are done right.

Let’s not forget the music and sound effects. The lonely guitar, the ominous kettle drum and the wandering harmonica together create an eerie music that changes according to what’s happening in the game.

I can’t stress this enough, this slot is gorgeous. The theme is simply done right.

Symbols and wins

Because we are in the Wild West, the reels are not your typical mechanical wheels. No, these are cowhides sewn together.

The symbols themselves are related to the theme. The low-paying card suits are stamped and painted on the hides, and for once, they actually fit the theme. The high-paying symbols are the tools of the sheriff. They are the spurs, the cowboy hat, the flask and the revolver.

There are a few special symbols in the game. During the regular mode, there is only the scatter symbol, which represents one of the bandits. If you catch them, you turn them into wilds. The scatters can activate the Re-spin and Free Spin features if you catch enough of them.

I found the game to be surprisingly balanced, considering it is a high-volatility slot. I was able to get some decent wins during the regular game and hold my bankroll afloat for a long time. Sure, the Free Spin feature is where the big wins are, but I didn’t find the game to be too top-heavy.

  • Re-spins: Catch the bandits and play again

Every time you get a scatter, you get one re-spin and you turn the scatter symbol into a wild with a 5x multiplier. If you manage to catch a bandit on every reel, you activate the Free Spin feature. You can see at the top of the screen which bandits you have caught.

  • Free Spins: Fight the gang leader and drive him out of town

Catch five bandits and you also catch the attention of the leader of this here bandit gang. You start off with a 5x multiplier on all wins and 10 free spins.

Each time the bonus symbol shows up, you get additional free spins and a bullet to the meter on the top. Get two bullets and your multiplier is changed to 10x and with four bullets, it goes up to 20x. And let’s not forget that you still have your 5x wilds on every reel from catching the bandits.

My experiences

I may not be the biggest western fan, but I have read my Lucky Lukes, watched my C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa and played my share of Sunset Riders. The cartoonish way this game is made really spoke to me and pulled on my nostalgia-strings.

I love what Yggdrasil has been doing lately. They have grown from a noticeable, but small developer to one of the best in the business. Games like The One Armed Bandit are a great example of what they can do.

I enjoyed playing the game and I’m sure I will return to the barren prairies of Yggstone one day. When the mood hits and I feel the twitch in my trigger finger, I will don the sheriff’s hat and star once more.

The year was 2013 when I first came across online casinos. Around the same time, I also began my career as a content writer, specializing in online casinos and casino games.

It's been an awesome journey, seeing how online casinos have evolved since the early 2000s to what they are today!

During these years I particularly fell in love with online slot games. I'm continuously amazed by how they've advanced from simple, three-reel slots to beautifully crafted games - sometimes working without reels entirely.

My favourite games are usually made by NetEnt and Play'n GO. Though it's hard to name just one all-time-favourite, Gonzo's Quest was the one that "reeled" me in.
