The Pools is a 2017-launched betting site that offers a wide selection of betting markets with almost 30 different sports and competitive odds. The best side of the brand is definitely pool betting, which offers gamblers an opportunity to win big jackpots. Pool betting was popular in the 60s and 70s when football pool betting slips used to be delivered through the mail. But nowadays The Pools enable bettors to place their pool bets with a PC or mobile - as it should be in the 21st century.

The Pools operates under the UK Gambling Commission, which provides tax-free winnings to all UK players and also a 100% safe betting experience. All new customers can claim a £20 free bet on the site upon registration. You can read more about free bet below.

ThePools started as The Football Pools in 1923 paying out over £3.2 billion over its lifetime. ThePools is firmly intertwined in the history of gambling in the UK, mostly due to the football pools that were popular in the seventies and eighties. However, there was a huge decline in support thereof when the national lottery launched in the nineties, making this form of betting an obscure pastime. ThePools relaunched in 2017 by moving online as many other bookmakers do, offering not just pool betting but a sportsbook, casino, lotto and scratchcards.

The website is easy on the eyes with the blue and white colour scheme, account on the top right, and all the sports listed on the left. The format seems familiar as it has been implemented by most bookmakers and therefore most punters will easily find their way around this site.

With so many bookmakers on offer, it is hard to find the best deals out there. Luckily, Bojoko has made this an easy task by providing you with a direct link to ThePools. You do not need any bonus or promotional codes, as clicking the link is all that is needed.

After clicking “Play Here” on Bojoko, I landed on ThePools website and clicked on a new customer sign up.

The registration process comprises a quick 3-step process. In the first instance, I provided my email address, selected a password and my marketing preferences and clicked next. Thereafter, I provided my personal details such as first and last name and date of birth. Finally, I just needed to input my username, phone number and address.

The whole process took less than 2 minutes to complete and only required basic information on my part.

Placing my first wager in line with the bonus requirement could not have been easier. I then waited till the wager concluded and immediately received my welcome bonuses.

When you want to place a wager to redeem the welcome bonus, you need to make sure that you always meet the wagering requirements found in the terms and conditions.

The Pools betting odds are at a good level and those do not pale in comparison to most other betting sites. When you bet at The Pools you can be sure that you place your bets with competitive odds and that you will get a decent return on your stake.

Theoretical payout percentage of ThePools betting odds is around 94%. This applies to most of the betting markets and sports such as football and tennis. It's not the absolute best that can be found, but offers competitive odds and at times some very high odds. Generally speaking the level of all odds are consistent for all markets without major differences.

The odds your bookmaker offers is an important part of what your experience with them will be like. Punters obviously want the best odds they can get, and bookmakers need to make a profit, but at the same time do not want to scare players away with low odds.

In my time playing on ThePools, the odds on offer were decent and never struck me as unreasonable or too low. I compared the odds on some of the games that ThePools had with the major High Street bookies and although they did not beat those odds, they came close. ThePools will not leave you disappointed when placing a wager as the difference is negligible and will probably not make much of a difference in your payouts.

Additionally, you have the choice of switching your odds between fractional and decimal should you prefer.

You can bet on dozens of different sports at The Pools. The selection includes all the popular markets like football, tennis and horse racing, but also a variety of less common sports like handball, cycling and Gaelic hurling. Individual matches also contain many additional markets, for example, you can bet on almost 200 different odds in a single football match including asian handicaps, over/unders and many more.

At The Pools, there are two main things for bettors; traditional betting, and pool games.

If you want to win with prizes from £5,000 up to £3million,  you should check out pools games. You can take part in classic pools, goal rush, premier 6, premier 10, premier 12 and colossus pools games and chase life changing jackpots. The minimum stakes at the pools are only £0.20 - £2.00 so you can access the games with a low threshold.

ThePools offer around 28 different betting categories to choose from. Most of the mainstream sports are well represented such as football, golf and horse racing. However, you will find the more obscure and less popular sports from the drop-down menu on the left of the screen.

Each sporting event has a decent number of markets available with the favourites such as match result, BTTS and over or under 2.5 goals easy to find. Additionally, the odds for these markets were very competitive and the depth of the markets do not disappoint.

The Pools has its own cashout feature. Cashout allows punters to cash out their winnings or save part of their stake before the end of the match. Cashout is available on all popular markets, but it is worth remembering that it is not necessarily available on every bet you place.

You can claim the cashout for the bet you have placed from your profile. Go to your user page and check your open bets, and see what kind of cashout offer is available to you.

The Pools offers a massive range of in-play betting opportunities for all kinds of sports round the clock and seven days of the week. You can place your live bets on football, tennis, basketball, snooker, darts, esports, and plenty of other markets almost whenever you want.

The brand doesn't offer a live streaming service for its users, but luckily, there are available in-play graphics, interactive match trackers, and a lot of real-time statistics. All the above mentioned is there to help you make the best possible betting decisions during live betting.

Live Betting has become a very important part of a bookmaker's offerings as it offers a quick turnaround and more excitement than placing a bet and waiting hours or even days in some cases for a result.

ThePools has an easy to find In-play section available from the menu bar at the top of the screen. In comparison to the High Street bookmakers, you have nearly the same number of matches with only slightly less available. Most of these will probably never be missed as all the major events are covered and only some of the more niche or obscure are missing.

The Pools did not offer a separate mobile app for its users in the early days of the site, but this changed soon. The site works well with the native internet browsers of smart devices, but for the best possible gaming experience, consider downloading The Pools betting app. The app is available for both Android and iOS devices and can be downloaded from either the Play store or the App store.

Fun fact: The Pools offers not just one, but two different mobile apps. A second app is dedicated exclusively to the site's free-to-play game called Footie5. In that game, players can predict the outcome of five football matches each week and the best players in the game can win as much as £25,000.

Rather than just refer a punter to their website, many bookmakers prefer to offer a dedicated app. This keeps players engaged and allows the bookmaker to connect with their client base at will.

Downloading the ThePools app was an easy and straightforward task. I simply headed to the Google Play store and searched for ThePools. After opting to install the app, it opened without any problems and allowed me to log in using my details from the website.

The app functionality was perfect and everything worked as it should, making it just as easy to use as the website. Placing a bet was straightforward with no obstacles at all.

Safe & responsible gambling

The Pools takes the rules of responsible gambling seriously and the site wants to do its best to prevent problem gambling. One of the ways to control your gambling on the site is to set your limits, for example:

If gambling seems to be taking over your life and you feel you need outside help, you can contact organizations such as BeGambleAware, GAMSTOP and GamCare through the links on the website.

You can contact The Pools customer service in several ways like live chat (icon on the right top corner) email, and even with traditional letters. Customer service is open seven days a week with the opening hours that you can find below:

Before contacting customer service, we recommend that you read the Frequently Asked Questions at The Pools Help Centre. There you will find dozens of questions and answers to customers' betting concerns.

Customer support is one of the most important parts of an online bookmaker, as it is often the only interaction that players have with the people behind the scenes of an online bookmaker.

Customer service at ThePools is available from Monday to Saturday between 8:am and 10 pm and on Sundays between 12 pm and 10 pm. You can contact ThePools using post, email or chat.

For my interaction with customer service, I chose to use chat and email. Talking to a customer service representative is done via the blue chat bubble on the right of the screen. At first, I needed to provide my details and then connected within a minute. I found the customer service to be helpful and knowledgeable, giving quick answers.

Contacting customer service via email was fast enough as my queries were answered in an hour compared to the days that some bookies take to answer.

For those who prefer looking for their own answers, you have the FAQ section in the help menu. Here you will find most of your answers, although they seem a bit short and could do with some elaboration.

KYC & Documents

Like all other UK Gambling licensed sites, The Pools needs to know its customers. You will therefore need to verify your identity with the appropriate documentation before you can deposit funds and start betting. Documents that may be required from you are the following:

Note: Each document must be sent as a separate image and your pictures must be focused and all the text easy to read. This way you can run the KYC process faster.

Expert's review Erasmus du Toit

As part of the gambling laws that regulate the industry in the UK, all customers must pass the KYC verification process.

Should ThePools need you to verify your account, they will contact you via email and you will have to send your documents for verification back through email.

To provide proof of identity, you can send in a clear photo of your driver’s licence or passport.

To provide proof of address, you need to provide documentation that reflects the same address that you registered on your gaming account. Documents that will be accepted are a utility bill, bank statement, council tax bill, broadband bill, or HMRC letter.

They normally do verification within 48 hours but can take up to 72 hours and you will be unable to make a deposit or withdrawal until the process is complete.

Money transfers on the betting site are handled by Visa, Mastercard, and Maestro debit cards. The same payment methods are used for both deposits and withdrawals.

The minimum deposit amount is £5, with a minimum withdrawal of £10. The brand doesn't involve any fees with either process.

When it comes to deposit methods, ThePools does not offer a huge variety, most bookmakers will offer a combination of deposit methods such as card and eWallet.

ThePools only offer deposits via Visa, Mastercard and Maestro, which, compared to other bookmakers, is rather lacking.

The deposit process was fast and simple, with my deposit immediately clearing in my bookmaker account, ready to be used. As with all card deposits, I simply provided my card details consisting of my 16 digit card number, expiry date and CVV number.

To withdraw my funds was easy enough, with no major hurdles to report. The transaction showed as pending for a few hours, after which it cleared my account in the next day, roughly 24 hours after making the withdrawal request. This was longer than I would expect since the majority of bookmakers process withdrawals much faster.

ThePools could benefit from adding other payment methods for those players who prefer the online wallet methods such as PayPal.
