If you're tired of boring and traditional betting sites, then Smarkets is the bookie for you! This site operates as a betting exchange, which means that the odds on offer are calculated based on the bets other people make, not by any calculated odds by the bookmaker.

There aren't too many bookies out there who operate like this, and with over a decade of experience on their belt Smarkets are one of the best in the business.

The betting options available are vast, the commission of the site is only 2% and the design is top-notch. Safety is also guaranteed by the UKGC license and all winnings are tax-free for all UK players!

This is what Smarkets betting exchange looks like on mobile

Smarkets launched in 2008 and since then have become one of the most popular betting exchanges in the sports betting industry. They mostly accomplished this by offering a low commission of just 2% on bets placed.

What is a betting exchange? Well, with traditional bookmakers, the bookmaker offers odds and you bet against them. However, with an exchange, things are slightly different. The exchange lets you bet against the other users on the exchange, in a peer-to-peer fashion. That means you place bets at odds that other punters bet against. The exchange acts as a middleman and keeps 2% for providing a service.

Smarkets, unlike other bookmakers, do not offer any casino games, instead, they focus on sports betting. However, this is not a problem, since they do offer great value, doing what they do best.

Once again, Bojoko has made it so easy to claim the welcome bonus when you sign up to Smarkets. Simply click on the link that is provided to claim your welcome bonus. No more remembering bonus or promotion codes, just click the link.

Following the link from Bojoko, I landed on the Smarkets page, which is well laid out and very easy to understand. To get started, I selected “Create Account” from the top right. To register with Smarkets, there are 3 steps that you need to complete.

Step 1. Enter your email, thereafter choose and confirm your password, followed by your date of birth, and then you can skip the promo code since Bojoko has already enabled this for you. Step 2. You need to confirm your personal details. Here, I filled in my first and last name, mobile phone number, country and currency and postcode. Step 3. Make a deposit. The final step is optional at this time. Now you can set up your deposit limits as well as make your first deposit. However, you can complete this at a later time if you wish.

Following the sign-up process, I made my initial deposit and placed my first wager. Fortunately, after placing my first wager, I received my welcome bonus.

The sign-up process was very easy, there were no hiccups, and I completed the whole process in under 5 minutes.

Please note that not all deposit methods are eligible for the welcome offer, so you need to check the terms and conditions first.

Free bet no deposit

Smarkets doesn't offer no deposit bonuses or free bets at the moment.

First deposit bonus code

You don't need a bonus code to claim Smarkets's first deposit bonus.

Significant terms and conditions

and bonus terms apply.

Being a betting exchange, Smarkets is available to provide fantastic value for money for players. The commission the bookmaker takes is an industry-low 2%, meaning that by betting at Smarkets you can achieve an extremely high payout percentage. Remember to use your new player offer and bet 60 days with 0%.

This commission applies to all markets at Smarkets, so if you want to find some proper bang for your buck when betting, this exchange is one of the best options out there!

Smarkets odds display

Smarkets offer a number of different odds formats. No matter the format used, the probability is always the same. It’s just the presentation that differs.

You can change the odds display in the settings. For assistance, see the image below:

At Smarkets you get to bet against other players rather than betting using the odds that a bookmaker offers you. As such, the odds are determined differently on an exchange compared to a conventional bookmaker.

Additionally, you have the option to lay or back a bet on an exchange that you do not have at the conventional bookmakers. To explain, when you back a team to win, you are betting that they will win the match. Whenever you lay a bet, that means that you are betting against a team to win, which could cover a draw as well as a loss for the team.

Smarkets offer better odds than you would normally find at a bookie, however, you do need to look at the liquidity that your prospective bet has before you make a bet. For most mainstream matches, you will find plenty of liquidity. However, for the more obscure matches, you might not find the required liquidity you need to place a bet.

Like you would think from a site with "markets" in its name, the betting exchange at Smarkets is full aplenty of fun things to bet on. Ranging from traditional sports to current affairs like entertainment and politics, you'll struggle not to find something of interest to you. The markets available for traditional sports contain all the leagues you could want from the biggest sports.

The platform is very easy on the eye, and thanks to the sidebars it uses you always have more than enough relevant information and interesting bets in front of you. The odds are visible both in percentage and normal form, and you can also see how much has been bet on in the exchange for each betting option.

Except for the usual sports on offer such as football, horse racing and rugby, Smarkets offer a fairly decent number of other sports and events to bet on.

I did not struggle to find bets on the less familiar sports and events, each with a fair amount of markets to choose from. However, placing a bet is determined by the liquidity in these markets and if someone is willing to take your bet.

The markets available on Smarkets do not seem as huge as you would find with some other bookies who could offer up to 300+ different markets. Though you will find all the major markets to place a vet on, granted there is liquidity available.

Like all the best betting brands in the world, Smarkets also offers players the use of a cash out option, which goes by the name of trade out on the exchange. Trade out is available on most bets, as long as their has been enough volume in bets on the match/wager in question.

By using the trade out you can lock in a profit whenever you like, and the more likely your bet is to end up winning, the more you will be able to trade out. If you want to use this option, it will appear on the market overview right next to the bet/contract you have made your wager on.

In-play betting is a real pleasure at Smarkets thanks to the large amount of statistics and relevant information available to bettors during the match. You can for example view when and how much has been bet on certain outcomes at certain times, along with all the relevant statistics.

The live betting markets at Smarkets are suited especially well for football enthusiasts, but the amount of sports available is almost as large as with their pre match selection.

While I was compiling my review of Smarkets, I kept an eye on Live betting. This never struck me as a strong point for Smarkets, as the variety available was not that impressive. Although you will find some individual events available, you will find much more from conventional bookmakers.

The depth of the markets on the Live play was also sub-par, with many markets not having liquidity in them at all.

If you prefer live betting, you might have to look at the more established High street bookies.

Smarkets is one of the most modern bookmakers out there, and this of course applies to their mobile services as well. You can enjoy practically all the features of their desktop version on mobile devices, no matter whether you're using a smart phone or tablet.

Players can choose if they want to bet at Smarkets straight through the browser on their device, or via the app. The Smarkets mobile app is available on both the App Store and on Google Play - everything you could basically want!

Mobile betting is an important part of every bookmaker's offering. It keeps your customers playing without the need to use a laptop or PC, using a device that everyone owns.

To download the Smarkets app, I simply logged into the Play store app on my phone. Thereafter I searched for the app, hit download and opened it once it finished.

To log in to the Smarkets app you do not need any other login details except for those you registered with on the main Smarkets site. Once you enter these, you have the whole Smarkets site available wherever you go.

The website and the app have a very similar feel, finding and placing a bet is as easy as on the Smarkets website and you probably never have to use anything but the app if you felt like it.

The Smarkets app feels polished and is very user friendly and definitely worth checking out.

Safe & responsible gambling

Safety comes first in almost everything, and betting is no exception. Smarkets wants to promote responsible gambling on their site, which is why there are options aplenty to help players limit problematic behaviour. These include:

There are also plenty of links to help get help, along with tips to help identify a problem gambler. If you or someone you know is struggling with a gambling problem, seek help immediately and cease all betting activities.

The customer service options at Smarkets are some of the most thorough out there, as you can enjoy help to all your problems even through social media! However, your first port of call when encountering a problem at the bookie should be the help centre, where you can find the answer to almost anything.

If this doesn't yield results, Smarket's helpful live chat team is available 24/7. You can also send emails, or make a call 09-00 if you own an account on the site. In addition to this, the bookmaker's Twitter is happy to answer any queries you might have, and you can even send the bookie a letter!

Contacting customer support while on Smarkets was as easy and straightforward as every other aspect of Smarkets.

To enable live chat, I simply had to look at the top of the page for the “Live Chat” button. After entering my query, they connected me to a customer service agent within minutes. The answer was polite and straight to the point, wasting as little time of yours and theirs as possible. Live chat is available 24/7 7 days a week.

If you prefer a different method, then you can use email, phone, Twitter or even post, all of these you can find from the Contact us at the bottom of the webpage.

KYC & Documents

Like all bookmakers who hope to operate legally in the United Kingdom, Smarkets owns a UK Gambling Commission license. This guarantees the safety and security of the site, but also comes with some responsibilities. These include knowing who plays on your site, which is why Smarkets might require the following information from you:

As will all bookies these days, you need to complete the KYC process, as required by law and Smarkets is no different.

Initially, Smarkets might not require you to verify your account as soon as you sign up. This is because Smarkets will try to verify your account electronically against various databases. However, when they do, you will be notified via email.

To upload my documents, I headed to my account. Thereafter, settings and then verification. Here, Smarkets will let you know exactly which documents to upload to complete the verification process.

For proof of ID, I simply uploaded my driver’s licence, however, you can also upload a photo of your passport or national identity document.

For proof of address, I uploaded my bank statement not older than 3 months. Additionally, I could have uploaded a utility bill, council tax bill, tax bill, or residency certificate issued by the government.

The verification process is just as easy as signing up. My verification took well under the 24 hours that Smarkets aim to complete these checks in.

Although Smarkets status as a bettin exchange might sound a bit peculiar to some, you can rest assured - the site offers players with all the best money transfer options just like any other big bookmaker. This means that both deposits and withdrawals can be made with the likes of debit cards and e-wallets.

The smallest possible deposit is £10, while refreshingly the minimum withdrawal amount is also £10, which is lower than on many other sites. Withdrawal times are quite standard, ranging from a couple of days with faster methods and up to about a week when using the likes of debit cards.

To deposit money into my Smarkets account was just as easy as the sign-up process, especially since Smarkets offer more than enough deposit methods.

If you did not make a deposit after your registration, you can do so at any time using the balance, then the drop-down menu at the top right. Here I selected a deposit and then used a selected Debit card. Next, I added a new card, filled in the long card number, expiry date and CVV, and confirmed my details and deposit amount. The money showed in my Smarkets account, instantly ready to be wagered.

After placing a few wagers, I needed to test the withdrawal process. Fortunately, this was just as easy as the deposit. I simply selected the payment method I deposited with, filled in the amount, and requested a withdrawal. After waiting for an hour, the withdrawal was complete and reflected in my account.

It is worth mentioning that Smarkets offer various deposit methods except for debit cards. Should you wish, you could also deposit via Bank transfer from any of the major UK banks, additionally, you could also use PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and Trustly. Each of these come with their own minimum and maximum deposits.

Smarkets use the closed-loop system, meaning that you must withdraw to a method that you previously deposited with.
